James W. Turonis
DDS, MS
Dr. (COL) James W. Turonis was born in Newark, New Jersey but grew up in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Scranton, Scranton, PA and was awarded a 2-year R.O.T.C scholarship in 1984 and received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology and a commission in the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant as a Medical Service Corps officer in 1987. He entered Columbia University’s School of Dental Medicine that same year and upon graduation entered the United States Army Dental Corps. In 1997 he was selected to attend the US Army’s Post Graduate Dental Education Program in Periodontics Fort Gordon, Georgia and was awarded a Certificate in Periodontics and a Master’s Degree in Oral Biology from the Medical College of Georgia. He is an active member of the American Dental Society, the International College of Dentists, the American Academy of Periodontology, and is Board Certified by the American Board of Periodontology. He is also the recipient of the Army Medical Departments, Order of Military Medical Merit.
He was given the privilege to command at multiple levels to include the command of the West Point Dental Activity with service to the Corps of Cadets/Faculty and Staff at the United States Military Academy from 2012 to 2015 and as the Commander of the Dental Health Activity, Fort Bragg, North Carolina from 2017 to 2020. He currently is in full time clinical practice and has established a stable home environment for his family in Whispering Pines, North Carolina. In his spare time, Dr. Turonis enjoys fishing, playing golf, and maximizing time with his wife, Lynn, and his three children, Noah, Kira, and Emma.
